Wow, a blog? What’s this?

Soooo, I forgot that this existed. I really should write more and post more instead of just snarky things on my instagram and memes on my facebook.

My daughter and I are going to start cooking more together (because she needs to know how to cook!) so maybe I’ll post some recipes or other things we do together. We just bought 2 rose bushes, so there’s gardening to be done too!

There’s all sorts of things I could do here… so let’s get cracking!

Sugar Cream Pie

I recently had cause to try to dig up my sugar cream pie recipe. I couldn’t find it. PANIC!

So, I started scouring the internet for recipes and comparing them to my memory. After reading a lot (and I mean A LOT), I threw caution to the wind and just started cooking.

I used a Kroger pie crust because pie crust and I don’t get along very well. No one complained, so win!

Mixed all these in a bowl and wisked the hell out of it:

1 cup sugar
1⁄2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup half-and-half
1 cup heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract (well, maybe not just 1 tsp, I eyeballed it, so maybe 1 tbsp because I love vanilla!)

Then I sprinkled cinnamon on top (don’t have/care for nutmeg) and very carefully slid it into the oven. I will have to make a few more to nail down the time. 375 degrees. One recipe wanted me to pre-cook the crust and then put it in for over an hour! Nope!

First one (pictured below) was about 45 minutes at 375 (no pre-cooked crust) and the crust was a little over done as you can see.

I think the second one I made was at 350 (but I can’t remember) for about 35 minutes and was set up perfectly on the outside edge but too liquidy on the top of the center.

2nd Pie

Both were very tasty and completely obliterated. I won’t have any problems getting volunteers for taste testing…

Election 2016, thoughts

A few thoughts and I’m done thinking about this. I have to move on, I have enough on my plate that I can’t worry about the idiocy of 50+ million people.

1 – If you voted for Hillary just because she’s a woman, that’s terrible and you should not play politics until you understand that the candidates gender means NOTHING. It’s about policy and lies and morals and ethics. If you think she would have made a great role model for your daughters, which I don’t, you weren’t paying attention when her husband cheated on her and she stood by his side supporting his corruption. You weren’t paying attention when people died. You weren’t paying attention when she lied to our faces. And you weren’t paying attention when she colluded with others to shut out Sanders.

2 – Sin legislature doesn’t work – you can pass laws against abortion, gay marriage, drug use, and so on, but it doesn’t matter – if people want it, they will have it, legal or not. Give up on trying to legislate sin. See also: prohibition.

3 – What happened is exactly what we should have expected, it’s what our culture has been asking for. You can only shout into the echo chamber so much before the only thing you hear is yourself. You are not alone in this world, and no one has to agree with anything you say. If we all agreed with each other, imagine how boring and stagnating this world would be. When we become so offended by another person’s very breath, this is the backlash.

4 – The goal is smaller government, not bigger government. The more laws you make, the more restrictions you place, the worse things are for everyone. You can’t say that we can make a choice but then say your only choice is horseshit or bullshit. That’s not choice.

5 – Nothing is going to change in the big picture. The world today is the same as it was last week. Let’s be honest. The only thing to change in the last 8 years is the sad state of health case. No one is going to have to wear yellow patches. They’re not going to round up people into gay camps.

So, what am I going to tell my daughter about this?
1. I’m going to tell her not to aim for president, because she needs to be an astronaut so she doesn’t have to live on this planet anymore.
2. I’m going to tell her that we have a media problem and that she shouldn’t believe everything she hears, that she needs to do her own research and make her own decisions, and to turn off the damned talking heads.
3. I’m going to tell her that just because 50+ million people think something is right, that doesn’t make that true.
4. I’m going to tell her that I’m not afraid of what’s to come.
5. I’m going to tell her to vote her conscience because she has to be able to look at herself in the mirror every day and know she made the right statement.
6. I’m going to tell her to work hard, do the right thing, stand up for what she believes in, and do what she can to make the world a better place.

Youtube Tuesday: Deadpool Edition

Anyone who allows me to talk about comics and movies for any amount of time soon learns that I have a deep and intense love for Deadpool. I am so very super excited about the movie in less than 4 months!

D. Piddy is my favorite cosplayer. This is his latest video, but I recommend you check out his other convention appearances.

Ivy Tech Spooktacular 2015

Last night was the Ivy Tech Spooktacular. Though I don’t think we had quite as many kids go through as last year, there were a lot. Not one Doctor or Dalek to be seen this time. On the other hand, I may have helped make a girl’s night by asking if she was Raven Queen (she was, and she was the only Ever After High character I saw).

The bookstore gang did Ghostbusters this year. Because I haven’t posted about it before, here’s a run down of what we’ve done before:

2014: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (sewer scene backdrop; Amy, Cassie, Dana, Krystle, and Tya were the turtles – yes we went old school and used Venus too, I was April O’Neil, and Sally was Master Splinter)

Sewer backdrop I painted, 2014

2013: Alice in Wonderland (the Mad Hatter’s tea party; I was Alice, Paul was the White Rabbit, Shayna was the Mad Hatter, Marcela was the Cheshire Cat, Cassie was one of the card guards, and Sally was Tweedle Dee.

2012: Halloween Party (spider and cauldron decorations and whatever characters we wanted to dress up like; Paul was a mad scientist, I was a princess, Shayna was a witch, Natalie was a devil, and Marcela was a beautiful La Calavera Catrina (I think I got that right).

Back to the present, we had four Ghostbusters (Amy, Cassie, Krystle, and Jeff) Willa was “there is no Dana, only Zuul”, with working proton packs and the front of the firehouse. The proton packs shot silly string!

They did a great job making a 3D backdrop this time – I only printed the picture for the sign, the participants did everything else!

It all went pretty well. I’ll post again about what our family went dressed as then and next weekend on actual Halloween!

Starry Night

This is so awesome that I had to share. You might have noticed that I love Starry Night. I also love science!

Youtube Tuesday Two!

I haven’t thought of a witty name for Youtube Tuesdays yet, and I thought Youtube Tuesday Two was cool. Alliteration tickles my fancy much like number sequences.

Since Halloween is coming, and a couple friends posted this to Facebook, and I thought it was hilarious, here is a spooky treat for those who love scary movies!

YouTube Tuesday!

I want to do something fun, so I’m going to try to remember to do this every Tuesday…

Rachel and I watch videos on YouTube, sometimes to get her to dance, sometimes, to make her laugh, sometimes to keep my sanity, and sometimes even to learn things! So I’m going to share some of the good ones with you (there are lots of bad ones, trust me).

This is one of our current favorites. Rachel likes to dance and I love how the video is synced up perfect with the music.
