The Armory

Mesh Armor

I designed the mesh armor as light and flexible, but durable protection for extended forays into the wilderness where a safe place is one you carve out of the various creatures who are busy trying to carve dinner out of you. While plate and chain armors are a solid defense, they are restrictive and uncomfortable to wear for extended adventures which can last days or even weeks. I learned from experience that even enchanted and thread armor can become fatiguing, and any loss to your reaction time can be fatal.

The basic design involves a heavy cloth reinforced with metal filaments. While this provides some protection, I took the design further by substituting special elements. I constructed the cloth with glinsthin and frasth (see Bedroll of Comfort, Arcane Mysteries 65) and elemental air so the suit keeps the wearer at a comfortable temperature, regardless of the environment. Linen or silk added as a lining keeps the rough cloth from becoming uncomfortable. Together with the materials used to construct everclean cloaks, this armor can be kept on constantly as guard against surprises. After the initial construction, I took the suit to a weaponsmith, who I commissioned to Forge the armor in order to increase its resilience. Afterwards, I had it threaded by one of my supporters who works exclusively on thread weapons and armor in Throal.

Putting finishing touches on such a suit can accomplish several different goals, from a comfortable adventuring outfit, to a formal suit for those who expect to run into trouble at the obligatory ball. It should be noted, however, that this can also be put to use by those who are not so well meaning, which means the next bar brawler you attempt to gut punch may be tougher on the knuckles than you may think, and that casual bystander could be harder to stop when he pulls a knife on an unsuspecting citizen.

Game terms

Basic full suit: Armor Rating 4, Mystic Armor 0, Initiative Penalty 0
(Note: the suits I made incorporated orichalcum mesh, giving +2 Mystic Armor)
Forging can double the initial armor values, and threading can add up to 7 points, distributed between the Armor and Mystic ratings.
