Artificer's Forest
There is a kaer in Barsaive, east of the Throal Mountains, known
as Artificer’s Kaer. It is the largest he ever invaded, and
he corrupted it so badly that the forest surrounding the kaer’s
entrance is corrupted as well. Though it does not spreadover a very
large area (roughly 2 mile radius from the kaer) the Artifice Forest,
as it is known, is much more dangerous than the natural land beyond.
Creatures affected by the area are more aggressive than their natural
relatives, whether they were born in the area or corrupted after
wandering into the Forest. Birds, deer, squirrels and even rabbits
tend to attack travelers rather than flee their presence. Though
nearly every “common” animal normally found in such
an environment is present in a more vicious form, magical creatures
stay away from the area by some instinct, and those which have become
corrupted have since been hunted to extinction by a war of attrition
with the other animals. Curiously, there are no insects in the Artifice
Forest, due to the odd harmonics created by the wind blowing through
the metal leaves. The animals no longer have any sense of the natural
relationship between predator and prey, with mountain goats taking
on pumas, and groups of rabbits bringing down lions. In a vicious
cycle, all of the creatures in the area have become omnivores in
the sense that they feed on both plants and animals, though the
material of both consists entirely of an identical metal now.
While the trees and plants that normally succumb to the seasons
now ignore weather, any leaves and branches removed from them grow
back. The plant life of Artifice Forest still grows, however, and
only the appetite of the animal population prevents the area from
becoming choked with vines and shrubs. In addition to increased
strength and resilience, several animals have become remarkably
more powerful than might be expected. The only reasonable explanation
for this is that the Horror specifically altered some creatures
more extensively, instead of creating his infamous traps. While
every type of creature is a hunter, some species are still better
suited to the task than others. The best example is the bladehawk,
the most dangerous hunter of the area. A name given equally to birds
formerly of hawk and falcon stock, single bladehawks have been known
to overcome tigers, bears, and even Adepts in single combat.
Attempts have been made to remove the effects of Artificer’s
corruption, but the efforts of numerous Adepts have only succeeded
in preventing the Forest from spreading.
